Overnight kit
Make sure you pack a kit with all of your pet's necessities so that you have them handy when you’re still working on unpacking. This kit can include their favourite toys, a container of food, kitty litter, etc
Keep them in a quiet area
Moving can be stressful and your pets can sense if you’re frustrated, tired, or stressed, especially if you have family or friends helping you move. This can be a lot of chaos for your pet. Consider having a friend or family member babysit them so that they can ease into their new home once it’s not so chaotic. If this isn’t possible, try leaving them in a quieter room with the door closed and make sure to check on them regularly!
Slowly introduce them to the new space
Some pets can be prone to anxiety and stress. If your pet tends to be anxious, try confining them to a smaller space in the home so that they can gradually get used to the new space. Give them some extra attention and make sure they have familiar items such as toys, blankets, etc.
Try not to leave them home alone
If possible, avoid leaving your pet home alone in the new house while they’re still adjusting. If they must be left alone, leave them with a piece of your clothing so that they still have your scent near them. You can also play calming music or give them a special toy to play with when you’re gone - that way they see it as an exciting opportunity to play with a special toy, rather than being upset that you’re leaving.
Updating info
Don’t forget to contact your vet about any prescriptions your pet might have and have them recommend a vet in the area. Update any collar tags and microchips with your new address.
Stay in routine
Try not to stray from the routine your pet is used to. Keep playing with them, walking them, and feeding them at the same time you usually do.
Long walks
If you have a dog, make sure to take them for walks around the new neighbourhood so they can get familiar with all of the new things to see and smell! This is also beneficial for puppies or dogs who have a tendency to be anxious as you can tire them out before bed, allowing them to have a good night's sleep in their new home.
